TMNT Shredder's Revenge Platinum Review

Yes, I'm a 90's kid and grew up with the TMNT. I wouldn't call myself a fan, but I really enjoyed watching the series and films. Turtles in Time is my absolute favorite beat 'em up game on the Super Nintendo. When I saw the first trailer for TMNT: Shredder's Revenge, I felt transported back in time. The same thing happened to me when I was finally allowed to play the game for the first time.

The wait was worth it. The game is fun in perfection. I've put countless hours into it, secured the platinum trophy and now I want to share my experience with you guys.

Right at the beginning you will notice that the game is something special and that the developers have worked with a lot of heart.

The game lets you choose between an arcade mode and a story mode in the menu.

The Story Mode:

In the story mode you can choose a character and walk across a beautiful world map that opens up bit by bit. The path is predetermined here, but there are also secrets to be discovered that open certain areas.

Eventually you will finish the levels, but you can replay them at any time. In each level there are different tasks that you can master (no must) in order to collect even more experience points.

By defeating enemies or destroying various items, you will gain experience points and level up with your chosen character. The goal is to get to level 10 here. If you want to earn the platinum trophy, you have to level up every character to level 10.

Pro tip: If you are still missing some experience points, I highly recommend level 12. This level contains a ton of enemies and they will spawn infinitely.

Before starting the story mode, you can choose from different levels of difficulty, to which you are then bound for this run. Unless you start a new one. You can always close the game and come back to your starting point.

More Turtles?:

The multiplayer mode is a real joy. The number of enemies and the hit points are increased here. I think it's great that beginners and advanced players can enjoy the game directly.

It's also nice that you can add another player at any time. It's easy to do with a drop-in, drop-out system. You can also have an online party at any time. Up to 6 players can play together here.

Of course, the more players, the more chaotic it gets. But the fun never stops there.

Tight Controls:

The controls are explained to you by a nice tutorial.

The dedicated dodge button is a huge asset and works perfectly. Successful combos allow you to charge up a super attack that you can use with the press of a button. So you can quickly wipe out the whole screen. Due to the different level-ups, you always get a new bar here. Various attacks are also unlocked.

You should not ignore the taunt (one button press). Always use this to charge your bar when you have the time.

Out In The Wild?:

I don't want to tell you the exact number of all levels, but you get a nice variety of different locations here and I really enjoyed all of them. The hidden items are also nicely placed. You can't miss these, but it still feels good when you find them.

It took me about 2-3 hours for my first run. Depending on the level of difficulty, you can add more time here. As already described, you can repeat the level at any time if you liked it or if you want to complete the different tasks (you don't neet them for the platinum trophy).

The bosses are also very nicely designed. Old “well-known” opponents come back but also bosses that you might haven't heard that much about.

The Aracde Mode:

This mode brings you the full aracde experience. Before you start, you choose the difficulty level, your character and start right away. After your death, you can still use your limited continues, but after that your run is really over. If you quit the game mid-play, you'll have to start over. Here comes the real challenge. The highest difficulty is really no joke. This is where you really need to learn the movesets and enemy placement.

The Details:

The developers put a lot of work into the respective animation in particular. For example, each character has a different walking animation. This is simply attention to detail. Come on, your partner is holding a pizza right in front of you to cheer you up, when you have no hp left. That's dedication and lovely stuff.

Turtles With Headphones:

Turtles in Time simply has legendary status when it comes to the soundtrack. So it just had to be delivered here. And I have to say, that I like this soundtrack even more. Above all, the many lyrics in the songs stand out to me. Various hip-hop songs are also phenomenal. My soundtrack of the year so far.

The Characters:

Leonardo (A good all-rounder with fast attacks).

Michelangelo (Great for quick combos. Penalties in range).

Donatello (The best range in the game. My favorite character).

Raphael (Great for quick combos. Penalties in range).

Master Splinter (Very strong. Great jumping attack. Slow).

April O'Neil (Great for quick combos. Penalties in range).

Casey Jones (You should find out for yourself!).

Not That Tasty:

I don't have much criticism but I would have liked more outfits for the different characters. There are so many possibilities here, especially with all the weapons.

I would also have liked it if you could see the level of difficulty in the online games beforehand (just a little icon please).

Only a few bugs got in my way. Once I fell endlessly and enemies didn't appear and another time the boss music was not triggered. However, these bugs have not reduced my enjoyment and I'm sure that they will disappear with the next update.

Verdict:

The developers managed to create one of the best beat 'em up games of all time. This game was definitely worth the wait and I can't think of another game in this genre that can match this quality in the next few years. Call your friends, order a pizza and just have fun!

9/10
