The Last of Us Part 1 - Platinum Review
Back in 2013, I played The Last of Us for the PlayStation 3. When the game was first shown I thought - yes, this is it! And well, it was. One of my absolute favorite games. I can still remember it very clearly. I played through the game with friends in one sitting. I had tears in my eyes, I was happy and was encouraged to think about the game for a long time.
The Last of Us was also one of the few games that I completely replayed right after completing it. One thing was clear to me, this is a masterpiece. I loved the characters, empathized with them and just felt transported into this world.
A year later, the game was re-released for the PlayStation 4. The resolution and the frame rate have been significantly increased here. Again, I played through the game again with pleasure.
Shortly before The Last of Us Part 2 came out, I played through the first part again to have the feeling from back then. What can I say, it worked again for me here too.
It's now 2022, countless remakes have found their way onto screens in recent years. Now also The Last of Us, which now also has the addition "Part 1".
The game is a full-price title. To say one thing in advance, yes, from my point of view it is worth buying the game and the price is justified. But it's always a personal perspective. For me, The Last of Us is an experience and a masterpiece of the video game history. I've never enjoyed a story like this before. Only the second part could repeat this. So it was a pure pleasure for me to play this game again with completely overhauled graphics.
What an experience:
I don't want to tell you too much about the story. Either you already know the story and thus know what kind of journey awaits you. Because this remake doesn't change the structure of the story. Scenes are the same however have a new and better impact. Facial animations have been heavily overhauled. The facial expressions absolutely contribute to the new experience. The most important moments hit me even more. Here you can see the attention to detail that is unmatched by Naughty Dog.
In case you haven't seen the story yet. Don't look at anything beforehand. Take a nice weekend and experience an unforgettable journey. It's worth it!
Survive:
There have always been different opinions on the gameplay, among fans and the press. However, I really enjoy collecting resources, crafting things and fighting for survival. Every encounter with the enemy feels important and has a certain impact. The melee combat is brutal (good) and combined with the gunfights, it's downright breathtaking. After throwing a glass bottle, you can still see the broken glass in the opponent's face. Attention to detail.
Entrails are spread out on the floor and parts of the brain stick to the opposite wall after a well-aimed headshoot. Disgusting but real.
With the quite noticeably better AI of the enemies, the fights feel real. They will flank you, hide, or attack directly when they realize you're out of ammo.
Thanks to the haptic feedback of the DualSense controller, you will notice every shot of the different weapons. You first have to draw the bow with your finger and then let it go realistically. You can actually feel explosions on your hands. The DualSense was created for such games and experiences - and you can tell. For me it's not just a gimmick, it contributes significantly positively to the gaming experience of The Last of Us Part 1.
Breathtaking visuals:
I have read many individual reports and comments in advance and must say that this is only a slightly remastered version is simply wrong. Gosh, The Last of Us Part 1 looks amazing. Textures are razor sharp. The facial animations are unmatched and the best I've ever seen. Furthermore, there is the already mentioned attention to detail, which you will feel at every corner. I was often amazed. The water effects in particular are absolutely gorgeous.
The unbelievable soundscape is also breathtaking. The soundtrack from the game is still unique and recognizable. Coupled with the new 3D audio and good headphones, you will be placed right into the game world.
Accessibility in video games:
What is also important to mention is the unrivaled number of different ways to experience The Last of Us Part 1. Over 60 different options can be selected here. You can even feel dialogue through the DualSense by delivering it through haptic feedback. This has never happened before. I haven't tried this myself, but what an achievement.
In addition to subtitles, difficulty adjustments, replacing HUD elements or adjusting the respective colors, pretty much anything is possible.
This is exactly how the game is made accessible to a larger number of people. Hats off Naughty Dog - hats off!
Attention to detail:
Rain realistically runs down the clothes. Wet clothes dry inside houses.
Bandages that cover an open wound will bleed over time.
Scales in the game environment show the character's weight.
Blood from corpses spreads realistically on the ground and even melts snow.
These are just a few examples. You should discover a few more yourself. It will be worth it.
Photo Mode:
The popular photo mode is also making a return. What is new is that you can precisely position the respective lights here. So you can customize your photo even more and capture great memories. The settings are really numerous. I really enjoyed the photo mode and I recommend everyone to take a look and try virtual photography.
The Platinum Trophy:
Of course I earned the platinum trophy. I would rate the difficulty of this trophy a 5/10. It's not very difficult. Playing through it again is not necessary. Collectibles can be obtained through Chapter Select.
Trophies that are tied to a certain level of difficulty were removed by the developers. Since there is no multiplayer, these trophies are gone too.
Unlockables:
After the first run, you can spend some points in skins for weapons and characters. I particularly liked the outfit for the upcoming megahit God of War Ragnarök. You can also take a closer look at the highly detailed models of the characters and enemies in the model viewer.
In the extra menu you can also select different parameters. Unlimited ammunition, unlimited crafting material or unlimited explosive arrows. Let the fun begin.
There is also a special speedrun mode and a permadeth mode.
Verdict:
A masterpiece is still a masterpiece. I would highly recommend this game to any PlaySation 5 owner. It offers a unforgettable journey, lovable characters and a visual presentation that is second to none. If the multiplayer part was important to you, feel free to reduce one point from my rating. But for me, The Last of Us was always a pure single-player experience, which was groundbreaking and formative for me - then and now.
